even at night my heart instructs me.
Psalm 16:7
Before going to sleep, we shared some words of Scripture with one another. Psalm 16:7 stuck in my mind. I recited it to the group, commented on the fact that God sometimes speaks to us as we sleep, and then went to sleep wondering if that was really true . . .
Ever since then, I've thought about Psalm 16:7 and what it implies. The idea of God speaking to us while we sleep is fascinating. Beyond that, the verse has taught me some important lessons about my faith.
First, the verse reminds me that I'm not in control. I can't accomplish much when I'm sleeping, but God is still at work. That's good to know. Jesus reminded us of the same thing when he noted that seeds grow even when the farmer sleeps. Sometimes we fear that God can't possibly build his kingdom without our help. Truthfully, he can do just fine - and he continues to build even while we sleep.
Second, the verse suggests that God works on us while we sleep. Eugene Peterson suggests that during sleep God can work on us without our resistance. While we sleep, we don't inhibit what God is desiring to do. We can understand the physical healing that happens while we sleep - but is it possible that spiritual healing is happening as well? Perhaps entering into sleep is an intentional way of placing cares, concerns, worries, and fears in God's hands - and inviting him to do his marvelous healing work.
Third, Psalm 16:7 makes it clear that God counsels us as we sleep. Facing an important decision, we sometimes say that we want "to sleep on it." That's a profound thought. The deeper truth is not only that a good night's sleep will help us make a better decision, but that in sleep God can instruct our heart. It's awfully noisy during the day - so maybe it's easier for us to hear God when we are asleep.
We have a lot of work to do. I know that. And we need to work hard. But having done that work, sleep is God's gift. And here's what sleep teaches us. First, God works even when we don't. Second, God grants unseen healing even when we're not aware of it. Third, God can communicate his will and his way even when we cannot consciously hear his voice.
What a mystery! And what a great truth!
So . . . I will praise the Lord who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me!
