For years, I thought the goal was to be significant, to make a difference, to leave a mark, to aim higher and to achieve more. And that's probably a commendable goal; at the very least, it's a goal that's honored and celebrated in our world.
All the same, it seems to me that John the baptizer got it right. In the presence of Jesus, John said "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30, NASB). Or as the Message so beautifully puts it, "This is the assigned moment for him to move into the center, while I slip off to the sidelines." What if the goal of life isn't to become more significant - but to become less? What if the goal of life isn't to make more of ourselves - but to make more of Jesus?
