But as for me, it is good to be near God.
Psalm 73:28a
Come near to God and he will come near to you.
James 4:8
I recently discovered a Saginaw radio station that I like. In fact, it's the station I listen to in my car now. The only problem is that the station is far away. As I drive around Alpena County, the station comes and goes. The reception changes mile by mile, moment by moment. Sometimes, what I want to hear disappears and gives way to something altogether different.
If I didn't want to hear this station so much, I wouldn't even care. But this is a station I sincerely want to hear. If I had a better radio in my car, I likely wouldn't have this problem - but I'm pretty much stuck with the radio I have. Still, I'd like very much to hear this Saginaw station.

I have noticed one thing though: when I happen to be driving in Saginaw, the reception is much better. When I am closer to the source, there is minimal static and other stations don't break in quite so often. Staying closer to the source makes it so much easier to listen to what I truly want to hear.
The same thing is true for my walk with God.
Of course, I don't have to drive to Saginaw to hear God speak. But the lesson holds true. If I truly desire to hear what God has to say to me, it will be a priority for me to stay close to the source. God speaks in ways that we can understand. God deeply desires that we hear his voice. But we live in a world where there is so much noise.
Distractions pull us off course. As we go from place to place, the clarity of the signal seems to waver. Sometimes, the sound that we want to hear disappears and gives way to something altogether different. Sometimes, the signal just seems to go away and it is very, very quiet.
There is no magic formula that can guarantee a clear word from God.
But there is one thing I know: staying close to the source is essential. When his voice is hard to hear, I know that it is time for me to draw close.
Usually, the problem isn't poor radio equipment - usually the problem is my location. And I can choose to do something about that.
As for me, it is good to be near God.
